The bonfire will go from 5:30-7:00 pm, with food being provided.

This week we will be having an awesome speaker from the Molecular Foundry at the Lawrence Berkeley Lab speak about undergraduate research opportunities! The Molecular Foundry is a DOE funded lab with state of the art technology to help researchers study nanotechnology and nanofabrication.

Also, we will be splurging on pizza!

SolarPower Corporation

Hey!

This Thursday we are co-sponsoring a panel of speakers from SunPower Corporation, one of the largest solar power companies. Also, ASME will be providing food and refreshments! So come join us during UU hour (11am-12am) in room 52-E27 (In the spider building next to the sandwich factory).

Also, they will be accepting resumes for internships and full time positions!!!

NACE/MESS Meeting October 22ed

Hey Everyone!

Next meeting is the first joint meeting between NACE and MESS. According to a NACE study the cost of corrosion annually is 276 BILLION Dollars! This is approximately 3.1% of the GDP. With United State infrastructure getting older, corrosion engineering is a hugely important growing field. If your interested in more information about the cost of corrosion, check out this link.

The speaker on Thursday is Jim Graham is from Permacolor, Inc. He will be talking about different corrosion resistant powder coatings processes and how they can help protect the life of materials.

Also joining us will be Channel Islands section Chairman Greg Owens, and section Vice Chairman/Secretary Terry Hurt. Greg Owens works for Sempra Utilities, and Terry Hurt works for Southern California Gas Company. Since NACE is a new club on campus, they will be assisting us with the chartering process and getting NACE involved on the sectional and regional level.

Super Conductors!!!

So several people wanted more information on superconductors prior to starting the project.

Superconductivity is when the electrical resistivity of a material drops to zero after being cooled past its critical point.

This youtube video gives a good primer on how superconductors are able to levitate.

Eventually, we hope to design a competition utilizing superconductors and build a demo that we can take to schools showing their unique properties.

Our first workday is this Saturday October 17th! We will be meeting at 11am in room 192-204 to set a game plan and then hit the labs. We didn't want to make a cookie cutter lab that everyone comes in and follows a recipe. We'll need to improvise and need your help! If you can't make it this week, we will be having another next week as well.

Just wanted to repost the MS&T Job Board info:

MS&T'09 Job Board Area
Visit the third floor Ballroom Foyer of the David L. Lawrence Convention Center at MS&T'09 between Sunday evening, Oct. 25, and Wednesday evening, Oct. 28, to view available jobs and post your resume.

Even if you are not planning to attend MS&T'09, you can send a resume ahead of time to Tricia Nicol (tnicol@ceramics.org) , and it will be posted on the job board.

Also, it looks like some UCR and UCLA students are starting their own MRS chapters. They have asked if MESS would like to coordinate/participate in some activities with them. I think it would be awesome so start thinking up some ideas if you can. You can always comment on this post if you have anything to share.

Intern Presentation and BBQ

Hey Everyone!

Next meeting (10/8) we are having a bunch of students who had internships last summer present! They will be talking about where they worked, how they got the job and all the cool stuff they did.

Why is this important for you???

In this crazy economy internships are very hard to find, but here you will get to learn the secrets of how to get one as well as which companies hired interns last year. This is especially important because next week is the fall job fair where bunches of interns are hired. We want to make sure that MATEs have the best chances and you get hired!!!

Also,

The BBQ was canceled this weekend because Santa Rosa park was way too crowded with fraternities holding rush events. We apologize for everyone that showed up. We still want to have an awesome social event so we are moving it to this Saturday. It will be held at Chelsea's house (directions and more information in the email) and then we will be heading over to Meadow park for some ultimate frisbee, football and volleyball. Can't wait to see everyone there!

If you need a ride, we will be picking up people in front of the PAC at 1:00. Please sign up in 204.

Hi MATES,

We have lots of awesome stuff for you coming up!

To start it off we have our first meeting this week on Thursday (10/1) from 6-7pm in 192-204.

At the meeting:

· Root Beer Floats!

· Information on MESS, MST, NACE, and ASM.

On Saturday (10/3) we will be having our annual BBQ at a location TBD.

· Starts at 2:00PM, we will be eating at 2:30.

· It’s a Potluck! We will provide burgers and buns you bring something that goes with to share. There will be a sign up board in 204 for food.

· Bring your favorite park toys so we can play Frisbee, football, whiffle ball, or whatever else you want.

After the BBQ we are all heading to the football game (around 5:00) for the game that starts at 6:00.

ALSO, we need some awesome t-shirts this year and we need you to design them.

· Designs are due Oct. 15.

· Any file type or even hand drawings are fine.

· You can bring them to a MESS meeting, put them in the yellow envelope in 192-204 or email them to ccotton@calpoly.edu.

Hey Everyone!!!

I hope you had a terrific summer! This year, MESS or Materials Engineering Student Society, is going to be trying to do things differently. We realized that there is a lot more then just speakers and free pizza that MESS can offer the MATE students. Also, we are trying to get a lot more freshmen and sophomores interested in MESS and helping out with the department.

Some of the awesome things we are trying to do this Quarter are;

Make a MESS project that everyone can get involved in where we actually make some superconductors!
Create a super informal "office hours" type deal where all the different grades can come hang out, study, and get to know each other. This can be a time when lower division students can come and ask "Which Physics teacher should I avoid?" and "What on earth is a non-homogenous differential equation?"
Create a teacher introduction series. All of us are going to spend 4 years taking classes from these professors, We wanted to get to know them out of class a bit more and figure out their hobbies, favorite school, where they grew up etc.

As always, we are going to have awesome events such as the beginning of school BBQ (Next Saturday!!!), MESS Thanksgiving, and Halloween Hoopla. Plus a great speaker series of course!

Meetings are every Thursday from 6:00 to 7:00 in Room 192-204 (the MATE room).
